INTERESTED IN PIPE ORGANS? Be sure to visit
the mother of all pipe organ web sites: www.savetheorgan.org The Steeplechasers work closely in conjunction with the Organ Historical Society and the American Guild Of Organists to provide documentation and specifications, where available, for the organs in churches featured on our sites. We welcome input from organists and from the public pertaining to updating of organ information. |
| |
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SITE |
| NOTE: If we have missed any historical
churches, or if the information contained herein is inaccurate, we will be happy to add to or update the site upon request. Effective 2009, the managers of this site have relocated outside of the New Orelans area. Churches wishing to add or update information should contact the Steeplechasers at jdemajo@demajo.net to coordinate those requests. |

THE STORY OF THE STEEPLECHASERS AND NEW ORLEANS CHURCHES.COM |
NewOrleansChurches.com was begun in 2001 by Kathleen DeMajo at the time that she was a high school freshman. Ms. DeMajo was given a class assignment to document the history, and provide photographs of several parish churches in her immediate neighborhood in New Orleans. Her father, John DeMajo, placed her report on-line on a web server that he operated in conjunction with his engineering and construction company. Through log records from that server, the family soon realized that Kathleen's collected data was being viewed by a multitude of users including visitors to the New Orleans area, cruise lines based in New Orleans, and by the featured churches themselves.
Upon learning that the site was providing a useful service to the community, Mr. DeMajo and his daughter founded the "Steeplechasers" organization and set out to improve and upgrade the site in order to provide information on as many churches as possible in their area. As musicians and members of the American Guild of Organists, John and Kathleen also decided to extend the site's resources to include information on the historic pipe organs that resided in many of the churches that they featured. After a five-year effort in this regard, they had photographed most major churches in Southern Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. A friend of the family, Jonathan Fox of Shreveport, Louisiana then assisted the DeMajos in gathering information on Shreveport area churches, and these were added to the site as well.
Following Hurricane Katrina, and the loss of their New Orleans area residence, the family relocated to Richmond, Virginia. They have pledged, however, to keep New Orleans Churches, com operating, and they are relying on their friends who remain in New Orleans, to help them keep the site current. They wish to acknowledge the work of Ms. Ellyn Orth-Meier who has worked closely with them in gathering updated information and photographs, as well as Mr. Eric Ordoyne, Mr. Roy Redman and Ms. Rachelen Lien who have helped to keep the organ information on the site updated.
Both NewOrleansChurches.com, and our sister site www.churchesofvirginia.org, are non-profit, non-commerical sites that operate strictly as a free service to the various congregations, and to the public. The operations are funded entirely by a continuing grant from the DeMajo family, and the services are provided free to any legitimate church or house of worship in the coverage areas.
