THE HISTORY OF FIRST ENGLISH LUTHERAN CHURCH

PHOTO ABOVE IS OF THE ARTS STREET LOCATION THAT SERVED THE CONGREGATION FROM 1956 UNTIL THE MOVE TO METAIRIE IN 2004.

First English Lutheran Church, founded 1888, has served the same neighborhood and population throughout its existence. Many of the German congregations of the Missouri Lutherans were not able to conduct services in English. With many younger German descendents in New Orleans, a need for an English speaking Lutheran congregation became evident. On July 13, 1885, a group met to establish the English Lutheran Congregation of New Orleans.

Original First English Lutheran Church building constructed 1889. The structure was destroyed by the great hurricane of 1915.

In 1893, a new church was constructed to accommodate a growing congregation. This altar painting was commissioned for that church. It has been relocated to the congregation's present church.

Goulding and Wood pipe organ is maintained in concert-ready condition. The organ will be disassembled and moved to the Metairie church when the congregation vacates the Arts Street building.

From 2004 until April 6, 2008, our congregation worshiped in a temporary chapel in the Lutheran High School Building. Here are some photos of that chapter in the life of our congregation.
